AMC & AMI in Australia...
« on: June 27, 2015, 07:36:23 PM »
Interesting bit of  Australian Auto industry history here.. what started out basically as Standard..becomes Australian Motor Industries.. then building out of Port Melbourne.. was infact the assembler of the first Toyota Vehicle outside of mainland Japan.. and on with vehicles like Rambler that just back in the 70's was the Official vehicle of the NSW Government for instance.. despite the fact we have in NSW alone THEN..   assembly plants for Leyland at Zetland  (now majority Chinese owned home unit land), Holden at Pagewood (now Westfields East Gardens site)...and Milperra..(carved up factories units now).. Ford at Homebush..(carved up and multi distribution center now)

Australian content just in NSW was out of but not limited to places like ACI glass, seat belts out of a joint a Sutherland..Borg Warners factory at Fairfield and Albury.. Tyres out of Bridgestone (Lidcombe)  and Dunlop (Canterbury Rd Bankstown - now retail outlets at Chapel and Canterbury Rd)

Victoria .. had the majority share with various assembly plants and larger facilities at Broadmeadows, Geelong, Dandenong, Altona, (all primarily due to close in the coming 2 years.. Port Melbourne (closed) but Nissan's Casting Plant still punching beyond its weight out of Dandenong
But the little recalled AMC.. AMI. the same company that assembled Ramblers.. Toyotas's & really short run AMX's etc..  plus Mercedes too for a time....all relevant chapters in a time of our Automotive history... now sadly  coming to a close.
