The Armstrong 500 (1965) We now know it as the Bathurst 1000

This video was sent in by John Neal (RIVIERA)

An old film of the 1965 Armstrong 500...

( which changed it’s name a couple of time, and then finally evolved into the Bathurst 1000.)

Take note of just SOME of the points of interest in this race.

*          Telegraph poles and dirt edges all around the track.

*          Barbed wire fences a’plenty.

*          100 mph down Conrod Straight, no Chase Chicane!

*          Drivers in “Dress shoes and overalls”

*          No cages/roll bars

*          Recovery men and Tow trucks on the track while the race continued.

*          165mm wide street tyres lasting the whole 500 miles (800 kms)...i.e. happy to show the “spare tyre” still in the boot at the end of the race.

*          7 minute pit stops.

*          Drinking PLENTY of  Heavy beer from kegs and “tallies” on the mountain.

*          Lapping at 3m-14 secs

*          55 cars racing...worth the incredible TOTAL value of 90,000-00 pounds( $180,000-00...an average value of $3,272-00 each.)

*          Race drivers stuck up on the mountain...changing their own tyres on the side of the road, as cars blast past them
