Musclecar Party – BYOB (Bring Your Own Burnout)
« on: October 26, 2012, 11:21:14 AM »

Everybody loves a good party, and when a bunch of musclecar enthusiasts get together there’s no telling what is going to happen next. There have been times when the talk turns to which car maker is better and it escalates, and then there are times when everyone just has a great time and talks shop. But when you have a private party for a bunch of gearheads, and you have plenty of open space it sometimes becomes a competition. In the case of this private party, it’s a burnout competition.

Upon first entry into the gate, our tour guide turns in and we see the remnants of a couple of competitions past. The driveway is lined with hot rods and muscle cars, and people are all standing by waiting for the festivities to begin. Everyone looks like they’re having a great time, and then the first car lines up on the paddock.

Now, most burnout competitions you see have a musclecar with a big honkin’ engine and for burnout duties they have a skinny pair of steel wheels with all season 70-series tires. Boring. You could probably do a burnout in a Prius if you get wimpy tires. But these guys are hardcore. they “run what they brung” and all burnouts that we saw were with the wheels that were on the car when they drove up.

Fat tires with nice wheels, old school steelies with fat meats, custom mags and sticky rubber – it’s all good. Then a guy shows up in his blue ‘vert and does one of the smokiest burnouts of the day, leaving a pile of rubber that was still smoking after he drove away. Some attempts weren’t so great, some were awesome, and some were simply off the charts.

There’s even a guy in a classic Mustang that roasts the tires until he disappears, as a passerby carries a hoard of liquid enjoyment to his peeps. While we strongly state that you should never drink and drive, or drink and do burnouts, we’re pretty sure that the alcohol made the burnouts much more enjoyable to spectators.
