This is a fairly technical question, it should be posted in my tech tips section. I would have replied two seconds quicker.
To answer your question without humiliating you take a look at any muscle car or serious race car and you will not see standard exhaust manifolds. Headers or extractors make power simply by extracting spent gases quicker to make way for the incoming fuel and air mixture. Mickey Thompson proved it 50 years ago.
The difference between headers and extractors is available ground clearence. Headers are normally block hugging individual pipes join together before the bottom of the sump to give you maximum ground clearence, Extractors desinged to give you maximum benefit but they are joined in to a collector with tuned lenght pipes ending below your floor pan therefore very little ground clearence.
For a mild small block you will benefit with a set of block hugging headers that will give you better tone, performance and even better fuel consumption.
