Will this work

<< < (2/3) > >>

Bumblebee:
Hi dave,

Having previously had a similar set-up, if you can work the budget, then a 465 or 600 holley, petronix ignitor III and coil, K code style air filter and a set of Shelby style Tri-Y headers (which I still use) with 2 or 2 1/4" exhaust (if you have the extra funds). Have it dyno'd and it will be sweet and lively.

If  it has the original autolite carb then there's not a whole lot wrong with it anyway, just get the rest set up.

Or should i get something a tad smaller.
Or maybe put a bigger cam in, sick of driving grampas car :omg:
Wheres a big block when you need one :thanks:

If you're going to compare apples with apples, all the Furd Motor Co. had in 1955 was a 292 Y block, and that was an option, not standard equipment like the 324 cid Rocket in the 1955 Oldsmobile.
:yeah:

Dave, getting back to your original question, I like to offer an opinion.  If anyone wants to disagree with me, feel free, I'm certainly no expert.

I would think that while fitting a well tuned 4 barrel carb to your 289 could make it run quite well, I'm not convinced that it will increase performance by much, if at all.

In my view, the limiting factor is the camshaft.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you have a stock standard engine that's spec'd for a 2 venturi carb.  On that basis, you'd have a low lift, low overlap cam that would suit the capacity of your factory carb and not much more.  Increasing the size of your carb won't help as the valve train can't swallow any more than is does now.

Again, just my opinion.

:yeah: I agree , dave get rid of  that little stick and get something decent, but not to silly ,600 holley, extractors etc
and your heart will start pumping again.
chris.

GTA390:
Chris,
The 600 is on it and has been since i bought it, it did come with a 4 barrel standard, A code, which is the 4V 289.
But standard would have been an Autolite, i'm guessing somewhere around the 400-450 cfm.
I know i have jumped out of something that had a bit of torque to something that i know would not be the same, but if you have been unlucky enough to follow me you would realise how rich it is running.
That where my original question comes from regarding jetting or is the the donk just too stock for that size carby.

Also i do know that the rocket was a top motor for its day, just don't let anyone else know ok
