Taking the Toll on your car or boat...
« on: January 04, 2010, 09:10:50 PM »
An interesting little side show is happening in the media over recent months and now quietly being spun around at the moment is to do with  PAY PER KM road use..""

... it explains that we (Australia) are SO far ahead of the rest of the world with GPS technology that its not a matter of time but a matter of Political WILL of Government to pursue the agenda .. of changing.. the way people Pay for Road use.

The story goes along the lines of .. you pay say $8 or $20 or so  per month rego.. then a PER KM charge on your vehicle.. NOT via a toll booth.. you abolish toll booths and motorways.. (have not heard BOO from the toll companies yet..)... you abolish the currently equal to Everybody rego fees that currently are levied..   We PRESUME petrol tax, road tax's and other charges on the motorist would be dropped or significantly reduced. A few EU countries have introduced various scheme in their obviously smaller countries.. but could you afford to go for a drive on the weekends regualarly.. or if your a shift worker.. & your days off fall between the weekends.. etc...???

.. Sounds ok.. but .. then goes onto explain.. (and this will sound familiar to Harbor Bridge users...).. a Pay Per Kms Per TIME OF DAY.. .. in peak you pay more.. etc..
If people want to opt out for public transport and leave the car in the garage.. till the weekend.. if you go cruising.. it will cost you.

And your insurance is measured the same way... and that is already available but not measured by GPS.. For example, if the insurance company quotes you $300 for a minimum premium and $0.10 per kilometre...  prices are based on your risk profile.

PAYG Rego on the other hand.. is based on deemed Carbon output, engine size, location ZONES traveled, type of vehicle &  weight.

And it does not have to end there.. as GPS trackers can be fitted to pleasure craft.. like boats or jet skis...

Personally.. without being paranoid, I don't like the idea of the 'global positioning system' its a context for further infringement on one's privacy...  but it might also work for many people.. and certainly be an aid for law enforcement wanting to keep track of people or their vehicles etc.. both historically & in real time.

  What do you think...???

I'm not sure if we can discuss this sort of subject here as it might be against the recent rule/ subject determinations.. but I dont give a rats.. and its a subject that is NOT going to go away and will eventually effect us.
